Promoting sustainable and environmentally friendly operation of the company, the PET bottle recycling company “PET Baltija”, which is part of the waste management and recycling group LLC (SIA) “Eco Baltia grupa” leading in terms of turnover in the Baltic States, has entered into the contract with “Latvenergo” for supply of green energy. From this year, the factory’s food packaging pellet production unit located in Jelgava, at Aviācijas Street 18G is fully powered by electricity generated from 100% renewable energy sources of Latvia.

Salvis Lapiņš, Chairman of the Board of the JSC (AS) “PET Baltija”: “Taking into account the fact that electricity is one of the most used resources in production process, choice in favour of green energy is only self-evident. Our operation in the bud is aimed at saving natural resources and efficient reuse, therefore we contribute on daily basis to reduce the ecological footprint to a minimum also in the company’s internal processes. Although this might be a comparatively tiny step against the background of global climate, it is a new stage for us on our way to become “greener” towards our environment in Latvia.”

Compared to the electricity used in production process so far, CO2 emission factor of “green energy” represents reduction by 94%. Thus, at the planned electricity consumption in “PET Baltija” factory, volume of carbon dioxide emissions could decrease by more than 800 tonnes in 2021.

“As our future steps, during the development of our company, we see using the renewable electricity in all the stages of recycling. Furthermore, our decision to switch to green energy is highly appreciated also by our current and potential international customers. Because, as we know, larger number of companies have started building their strategy of sustainability on “greener” and environmentally more friendly principles. Therefore, this aspect is very important for our partners assessing also the opposite side of cooperation,” says S. Lapiņš.

By recycling PET (polyethylene terephthalate) bottles, the JSC (AS) “PET Baltija” produces high-quality secondary raw materials – flakes and pellets – used for production of new packaging material and goods. In 2019, the volume of PET bottles recycled by the JSC (AS) “PET Baltija” reached record-breaking 40,895 tonnes. Nearly 100% of the produced raw materials are exported to Poland, Germany and other European regions, including the neighbouring countries of Latvia. “PET Baltija” commenced its activity in 2003. The company currently employs more than 200 employees.

The JSC (AS) “PET Baltija” is a part of “Eco Baltia grupa”, which is the largest environmental and waste management group of companies in the Baltic States ensuring full waste management circle from collection and sorting to secondary logistics, wholesale and recycling of raw materials. The group includes environmental management, collection of secondary raw materials and used packaging recycling companies “Latvijas Zaļais punkts”, “Eco Baltia vide”, “Eko Kurzeme”, “Jumis”, “PET Baltija”, “Nordic Plast” and “Eco Teh Baltia”.
